Mark Schefkind, M.D.

Mark Schefkind, M.D. is a board certified ophthalmologist who has practiced ophthalmology in the Mt. Vernon community since 1989. He is a Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Tufts University and an AOA (medical honor society) graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Schefkind served his residency in ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. He is Chief of Ophthalmology at Mt. Vernon Hospital and specializes in no stitch cataract surgery. He has been named a top doctor in the Washingtonian and Northern Virginia magazines.

Dr. Schefkind specializes in small incision cataract surgery employing advanced technology. This surgery is performed without stitches or shots in a state of the art surgicenter located in the INOVA HealthPlex building in Springfield. Dr. Schefkind has extensive experience with the various implant options available including toric lenses to correct astigmatism and the RESTOR lens to assist with reading. He will help guide you through the entire process.

Dr. Schefkind also performs laser procedures and minor ocular and eyelid surgeries in the office. 

Edward Chay, M.D.


Edward Chay, M.D. specializes in Glaucoma and Comprehensive Ophthalmology. He has a background in computer engineering from his undergraduate education at Carnegie Mellon University. He completed his medical training at the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate, internship at Yale University, and residency in Ophthalmology also at SUNY Downstate. He then completed his fellowship in Glaucoma at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Chay is published in numerous journals and performs minimally invasive glaucoma (MIGS) surgery as well as cataract surgery with premium lens implantation. He is active in resident education and community outreach. Though glaucoma is a serious disease, if promptly diagnosed and responsibly treated, many of its effects can be minimized and a healthy and productive lifestyle can be maintained. Dr. Chay's mission is to foster a strong doctor-patient partnership through compassion, listening, and providing state of the art medical care.

Office Policies


Routine appointments are scheduled by calling our main number at 703-997-9710. Early morning and evening appointments are available. We are also available for emergencies and treatments both during and after business hours. A $50.00 fee will be charged for any appointment canceled without 24 hour notice.

Refraction is the testing to determine the prescription that you need for glasses.

Your insurance company may not cover this part of the examination. The cost of refraction is $62.00.


Your records are kept strictly confidential. If another individual or organization needs access to information about you, we will require your authorization before any information is released.


Any required copayment will be collected at the time of service. Most insurances will cover complete eye examinations and treatments if there is a medical condition or a diagnosis.

Insurance companies may or may not cover routine eye examinations without a medical diagnosis. Please check with your insurance carrier. Our billing department is happy to assist you.
